Training & Development - Basic Drilling Engineering

Offshore Drilling Operations

This course is designed to introduce well engineering professionals to the offshore and subsea and deepwater operating environment. It covers the technologies, terminology, concepts, processes, and equipment used to drill offshore oil and gas wells.

The course follows a typical offshore drilling program and drilling process from offshore program and drilling process from offshore geology, shallow hazards assessments, to rig selection, metocean assessments and station keeping to conductor driving and jetting practices. The course discusses offshore wellhead systems, BOP and marine riser systems and typical offshore rig equipment. Once the conventional offshore drilling process and equipment is taught, we then look at some new emerging terminologies such as dual gradient and managed pressure drilling. Finally, we discuss some of the typical operational aspects and workover issues associated with offshore drilling.

Course Content:
  • Mobile Offshore Drilling Units (MODUs) - JUs, Semi Submersibles and Drill ships
  • Offshore Drilling Equipment
  • Water depth, Seafloor Bathymetry
  • Hydrates & Shallow Hazards Mitigation
  • Introduction to Riser design & selection
  • Foundation Construction - Conductor jetting, positioning etc
  • Narrow Margin Drilling Operations
  • Annular Fluid Expansion (TAP) implications and mitigation.
  • Offshore Well Control challenges (with special focus on BP's Macondo incident)

Fee: Available Upon Request
